The Exhibition and Retail Gallery Assistant will work with a dedicated Alberta Craft Council team to develop their skills as a gallery preparator, gaining experience in laying out, handling and installing a variety of artworks and exhibitions.   The successful candidate will assist in the planning and implementation of programming related to exhibitions such as coordinating artist talks, demonstrations and exhibitions receptions.   They will also expand their career skills in a supportive environment with access to mentorship from professional curators and administrators in the fine craft field, participating in exhibition selection process, coordinating exhibiting artists, developing press releases and other promotional material.

The employee will also assist in the Alberta Craft Council Retail Gallery, which displays the work of over 150 Alberta emerging and established fine craft artists.  As part of this role the employee will learn about various fine craft mediums, processes and craft artists.  They will provide customer support in the gallery, process sales of artists work, and learn proper object care, handling and packaging.

We’re seeking someone with good organizational skills, experience working with the public, strong computer skills and communication experience/education with a focus on events, promotions, and customer service.

Education Required: University or College (returning student or graduate). This position requires the successful candidate to be between 15 - 30 years of age.

About the Alberta Craft Council
The Alberta Craft Council produces 10+ original exhibitions each year and markets the work of approximately 150 members.  The Council also provides advisory and other member services, coordinates extensive communications activity, and promotes contemporary craft arts widely.

Alberta Craft Gallery Shop Coordinator – Edmonton

Salary commensurate with experience: $37,000 – 40,000
Competition deadline: May 15, 2019 (or until suitable candidate is found)

Hours: Full-time Permanent Position (35 hours a week, some Saturdays required)

The Alberta Craft Council is looking for a dynamic craft retail focused team member who has enthusiasm for working with artists and the public within a non-profit arts organization.  This is a key position at the Alberta Craft Council, to generate sales and revenue for our artists and the organization. The Coordinator will build successful relationships with clients and artists providing excellence in customer service to reach revenue goals.  

In this hands-on position working in the Gallery Shop, you will be overseeing daily operations, customer service, and managing part-time Gallery Shop staff and volunteers within their supporting roles.  

The Alberta Craft Gallery Shop Coordinator has the important role of working with over 150 emerging and established professional Fine Craft artists represented in our retail shop.   This position also serves a developmental role in the careers of our artists, offering meaningful long-term feedback and support.    

The Gallery Shop Coordinator will also work collaboratively with the Craft Council team to create and deliver professional development opportunities and support for craft artists and the sector.

The ideal candidate would have a degree in Craft or related experience, a background in Arts Administration, with retail experience.

About The Alberta Craft Council:
The ACC is a Provincial Arts Service Organization and the largest Provincial Craft Council in western Canada. ACC operates Edmonton’s second largest public gallery, and Alberta’s only public galleries (and touring exhibitions) dedicated to fine craft. Now with two locations, Edmonton and Calgary, the Alberta Craft Gallery is even more dynamic and involved with the Alberta fine craft scene.   

The Alberta Craft Council was founded in 1979 and now operates with a budget of $800,000+, a board of 12, a staff of 10, and a membership of about 400 (approximately 70% of whom are professional craft artists). ACC activities attract an annual total audience exceeding 40,000. The Alberta Craft Council produces original fine craft exhibitions, markets the work of 150 members, provide advisory and other member services, coordinate extensive communications activity, and promotes professional contemporary craft arts widely.

Alberta Craft Gallery Shop Coordinator – Edmonton key activities include:

  • In this hands-on position working in the Gallery Shop, you will be overseeing daily operations, customer service, and managing part-time shop staff and volunteers
  • Build successful relationships with visitors, customers and artists, providing excellence in customer service to reach revenue goals
  • The Gallery Shop Coordinator leads and supervises part-time staff and volunteer team, trains and assists in developing their skills and craft knowledge to ensure they have the resources needed to provide high level customer service and information to the public
  • Maintain professional communication with consignment artists regarding: contracts, ongoing inventory of work, craftsmanship and content considerations.  Advise consignment artists to assist in their retail product and career development
  • Visual Merchandising, product rotation, general shop upkeep, ordering display equipment and packaging
  • Work with Alberta Craft Council staff in the selection process of new artists and work represented in the Alberta Craft Gallery Shop
  • Leads and coordinates corporate and custom orders
  • Coordinate with the Alberta Craft Gallery – Calgary concerning consignment artists, inventories, reports, etc.
  • Work collaboratively with the Alberta Craft Council team to create and deliver professional development opportunities and support for craft artists and the sector
