Advisory Committee

The Advisory Committee is a member service offered to all ACC members. Its goal is to examine work and provide advice about quality, design, and saleability.

Unlike traditional juries who generally give you a yes or no decision, the Advisory Committee provides analysis, direction, and encouragement.  Whether there is a new line of work you would like feedback on, market positioning questions, technical concerns, or you would like to see how your work is perceived by a group of your peers, then the Advisory Committee is a resource for you.

Another goal of the Advisory Committee is to facilitate a system whereby the quality and marketability of the crafts offered for sale within the Alberta Craft Gallery achieve a high standard that will benefit everyone - the buyer, the seller and you, the craft artist.

If you would like to have your work reviewed by the Advisory Committee please complete the Advisory Committee Questionnaire (pdf).

The Advisory Committee consists of 6 to 8 members of ranging expertise from varying disciplines in fine craft, marketing and promotion, and arts management.

The Advisory Committee is responsible for:

  • convening each month
  • inviting guest artists of specific disciplines to participate in the review process
  • tailoring the review to address the interests of members who seek a general professional critique, representation in the retail gallery, or both for no additional charge
  • assuring a high standard in the quality and marketability of the crafts offered for sale within the Alberta Craft Gallery

The Advisory Committee accepts or declines work for the retail gallery based upon a number of criteria, which have been developed to best assist you, both with your present and future marketing needs, and also with our ability to successfully promote you and your product.

Criteria include:

  • Design
    - originality
    - creativity
    - use of colour
    - suitability of materials

  • Craft Skills
    - finishing details
    - technical skills
    - experience with materials and function

  • Marketability
  • Pricing
  • Product Presentation

  • Work is taken on an ongoing basis

  • The Advisory Committee does not review applications in November or December

  • Be sure to read the Advisory Committee Submission Criteria to assure work fulfils the submission criteria

It is recommended, however, that only those craft artists serious about developing their skills and/or career submit a portfolio to the Advisory Committee.
