generation whY
exploring the voices of craft makers 35 & younger
July 16 - September 24, 2011

Through collective events and experiences a generation can be defined. What will this generation have to say and what, if any, commonalties will these craft makers share? The ACC published a call for craft makers born in this generation to share their distinctive voice through fine craft. The response exceeded expectations as intriguing submissions from all over Alberta and beyond were received. A gelling of themes began to emerge, including technology, social issues, the environment and even anatomy - all creating a cohesive glimpse into the elements distinct to today, that inspire the generation known as generation Y.

Participating artists: Natasha Andrusky, Breanne Avender, Seathra Bell, Dave Curoe, Dayna Ellen, Jennea Frischke, Alaynee Goodwill, Nicolette Harrison, Gillian Hilerud, Michael Holton, Kyla Johnson, Xanthe Isbister, Julia and Yolande Krueger, Leah Nowak, Shanell Papp, Bonnie Slager, Jenna Stanton, Claire Uhlick, Meghan Wagg, Michael Yung

Off the Floor
Contemporary Rug Hookings by St. Albert fibre artist Rachelle LeBlanc

July 16 - August 27, 2011

When I sat down to design the show, I found myself flooded with memories from childhood and of moments spent with my own children. My thoughts kept falling on how fast life goes by and how little time is spent just being still. Off the Floor focuses on children spending a day picking apples, daydreaming in the sun and finding oneself in love. I wanted to express how important it is to find time in my daily life to observe the simple truths that evoke feelings, provoke memories and even transport me to a time of innocence. - Rachelle LeBlanc

Rachelle LeBlanc was born in Boston, grew up in New Brunswick and now calls Alberta home. She studied fashion at Sheridan College in Ontario and teaches her techniques across Canada and the United States. LeBlanc’s work has been shown in museums and exhibitions throughout the North America. Her work has been selected for the Musée des Maître et Artisans in Montreal and Shelburne Museum in Vermont, For the Love of Craft (ACC), Prairie Excellence – traveling exhibition (ACC).She won the prestigious Jurors’ Choice Award for Pushing the Limits - New concepts in Rug Hooking at the Newtown Rug Hooking Show in Connecticut and Rug Hooking Magazine’s 2011 Celebrations Original Design award.

Specimen
an exploration of insects by jewellery artist Erin Boukall
July 16 - August 27, 2011

Erin Boukall’s jewellery explores the beauty of insects. Specimen was inspired by the similarities that can be found between insects and jewellery - symmetry, design, patterning, color, structure, and mechanics. Erin finds it intriguing that most individuals acquire personal (often childhood) memories that include bugs. Specimen conjures up these memories and encourages interaction with the audience. The display of the artwork references entomological and scientific specimen collecting. This reveals that the attention to detail that is often neglected can be fascinating and worth exploring.

Making jewellery using these unlikely sources of inspiration raises age-old questions about beauty and what we chose to adorn ourselves with. This exhibition showcases a variety of pieces both sculptural and wearable that examines these parallels through the use of traditional and modern jewellery techniques. Erin is currently a student in the Jewellery + Metals Program at ACAD and resides in Calgary.

7. NEW A View of Calgary's Arts Organizations

Calgary Arts Development this week released a snapshot of data collected from over 160 arts organizations in Calgary. The stories behind the data show an increasingly strong and vibrant arts sector whose benefits can be seen throughout the city. Based on information provided in CADA's 2009 Operating Grant Program cycle, the data shows how dollars invested in arts organizations translate into multiple and diverse opportunities for citizens to actively engage as participants, audience members, volunteers, employees and artists within their communities and the city at large. The data shows conclusively that by investing in arts organizations, citizens are contributing to the city's economic and social well-being and its overall vibrancy.

New Exhibits Explore Urban Connections to Nature

Two new installations are now on view at the TELUS Convention Centre window spaces on the 7th Avenue and Centre Street LRT platform:

Urban Wild considers the planned - and sometimes unplanned - interactions between cities and 'the wild.' Featuring the work of eight clay artists (Constance Cooper, Krista Gowland, Aldo Marchese, Connie Pike, John H. Robertson, Monika Smith, Darlene Swan and Susan Thorpe), Urban Wild reminds us that nature remains a large part of our lives, even when it seems like we're stuck in a concrete jungle.

With support from McLennan Ross LLP, OPEN SPACES celebrates the diversity and quality of locals artists while enlivening the downtown 7th Avenue transportaton corridor.

10. Red Deer College opens doors to International Sculpture Symposium, Bergen Rocks RDC
JUL 28-AUG 28
Closing reception: AUG 28, 5-8 pm

Red Deer College has long been known as a place to welcome international artists. This summer, the College will open its doors to the International Sculpture Symposium, Bergen Rocks RDC, from July 28 – August 28, 2011.

Bergen Rocks has been held at the Morton Burke acreage in Bergen, Alberta for the past three years. The event this year at RDC involves the selection of eight international stone sculptors who will spend one month on-location creating monumental stone sculptures. The event has attracted approximately 2500 visitors in years past. The Symposium will be open to the public six days a week for viewing, and the month will culminate with a closing reception on Sunday, August 28, from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

“RDC is proud of the leadership role we play in central Alberta. We’re proud to serve the educational needs of our region every day. And through hosting world-class events such as Bergen Rocks, the College is proud to contribute to our region’s cultural development. We’re excited to host this event in our newest venue, and look forward to welcoming hundreds of central Albertans on campus to view the sculptures as they come alive,” says Joel Ward, RDC President.

Morton Burke has personally sponsored and ran this event since its inception – which is currently the only one of its kind in Canada. This year, the artists will be coming from Italy, Mongolia, Korea, Turkey, China and the Czech Republic.

The process will involve the sculpting of over a hundred thousand pounds of stone being crafted into something beautiful. At the end of the Symposium, five of the completed sculptures will be taken to Morton’s acreage. The remaining three sculptures will be exhibited in Red Deer.

Involving the entire community in this Symposium is important to everyone involved. Volunteer opportunities will exist at Bergen Rocks RDC, where local citizens can contribute to the creation of art works by assisting one of the international artists.

“After participating in these types of events in Europe and Asia, I felt it was important to bring a similar experience to Alberta,” says Morton Burke. “Starting Bergen Rocks at my home, and now growing it to its new venue at RDC is exciting and will help share the art of sculpture with more people. This event reinforces my belief that with the right kind of support, communities can realize many benefits from the arts.”

The MicroGrant gives the EAC a new way to invest in the success of Edmonton arts and artists. With no set deadlines for applications and amounts up to $1,000 available, the MicroGrant enables you to respond to opportunities quickly, and to give life to projects that are just a boost away from take-off.
