Dawn Detarando, Red Deer

Dawn Detarando moved from urban Boston to semi-rural Alberta, in 1998, and suffered immediate "visual shock". This became a powerful new influence, in work that observes and comments on her new professional and personal environment, and speaks about migration and change. Dawn specializes in clay sculptural and clay tile work, from a remarkable self-built creek-side studio that she shares with husband Brian McArthur. Jointly they received the Alberta Craft Council's 2005 Award of Achievement, for emerging craft artists

"Prairie Canary"

Locally mined terracotta clay, low-fire glazes

55 cm (22 in)

Newcomer's viewpoint … grain is still the life-blood of rural Alberta … but iconic grain elevators are disappearing, becoming mere ghosts of the past … the canary is a warning about industrial agriculture and corporate pressure on rural life … an apple speaks to the temptations of urban opportunity … all in a deceptively pretty landscape …

$1500 CDN
