Rose in the Wintertime

Leaf pattern hand knit in silk, with hand knit cotton edges

Value: $1500.00

"I have been knitting since I was 2 years old, when I was taught by my grandmother. It has been, and still is, a craft, which I enjoy to practice and learn about. I have always been fascinated by the techniques and variety of patterns, which can be created by two needles and yarn. In particular, the ancient art of lace knitting and the challenge of creating new designs in lace currently interest me. Challenges for "Rose in the Wintertime"
1. using silk as a material - it is not a forgiving yarn like wool
2. placing block colour work (intarsia) into the technique of knitting in the round - they are not compatible techniques
3. changing a piece worked to produce a circle into a square (diamond) wall hanging
All of these obstacles were easy to solve compared with the challenge of separating 4 ply silk into single ply in order to have a finished piece in a manageable size."
