Alberta Craft Awards 2010

The Alberta Craft Council is excited to present the 6th Annual Alberta Craft Awards. These awards recognize the value and contribution of individuals to Alberta's fine craft culture. The recipients were recognized at a ceremony October 16 in Calgary and will be featured in a Discovery Gallery exhibition, January 2011, in Edmonton.

The Alberta Craft Council would like to thank the following:
Greg & Darcy for being such gracious hosts for our event, DaDe Art & Design Lab in Calgary was a fantastic locale for our awards celebration. Dj Isaac Terry for the great tunes, and photographer Mike Lipsett for capturing the event. The ACC staff, Board of Directors, and volunteers who helped make the evening such a special event.

Alberta Craft Awards would not exist without the generous
donations from the many individuals who make them possible.

The 2010 Alberta Craft Award Recipients are:

Linda Stanier & Family Memorial Award

  • Celebrating the life of Linda Stanier, this annual endowed award has been created to honour an Alberta professional craftsperson working in clay.

The recipient of the 2010 Linda Stanier & Family Memorial Award is:

Sam Uhlick (Ardrossan)
Nominated by Diane Sullivan

Sam Uhlick, born in Edmonton, has studied at the Banff Centre, and the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design. Early in his career, Uhlick apprenticed with Michael Cardew at Wenford Bridge Pottery in Cornwall England and participated in several study tours that included Japan, Korea and China. A committed student of ceramic history, his experiences in Japan has played an important role in his career. For more than 35 years Sam with his wife Antonia Huysman, have supported their family by making and selling pottery. He has exhibited nationally and internationally, and is in many private, corporate and public collections - and kitchens.

After receiving the award Sam had this to say:

"I would like to thank the family of Linda Stannier for creating this award and the Alberta Craft Council for encouraging me to accept the nomination and of course I would like to thank the jury. I would especially like to thank Dianne Sullivan for her lovely and generous letter of nomination. A letter like that from such a respected artist is a rare treat.

"I fell in love with pottery 40 years ago and it became my life. I still love pottery after all these years. I value the unconscious essence of simple pots that are made to be used. One of my teachers, Michael Cardew said that "the training of a potter is limited only by the span of his life". My training for the past 40 years could only have taken place with the support of our friends and customers. The people who love and use my work give it meaning. I have been especially lucky to have the support of my family and of my wife and partner, Antonia Huysman who has been my comfort and help for 30 years. I love you Antonia.

"It is a great honour to be given this award and to accept it in the company of my friends and peers. Thank you very much."
