Shaping

Most pieces are now given their final shape by either hammering them around a steel shape called a mandrel with a rawhide mallet that leaves no marks (bracelets), or by hammering them gently face down into various hollows in a log. The wood leaves no marks on the face, and the piece becomes gently domed outwards. Some brooches are shaped before assembly.
