Simon
Wroot is a British-born metal artist who now lives and works in his
studio in Calgary, Alberta. Previously self-trained in photography,
woodworking and stained glass, his affinity for metal has surfaced since
he moved to Calgary in 1987. Over five years he took courses at the
Alberta College of Art and Design, the Lewton-Brain-Fontans Centre for
Jewellery studies, and studied under Karen Cantine at Series, Red Deer
College
Simon
started teaching the Craft Business Training Program for the Alberta
Craft Council in 1996 and, in 1997, joined the Council's Board of Directors,
becoming Board Chair 2 years later. He is currently Past Chair of the
ACC`s Board, and after 13 years as Alberta`s Director on the Board of
the Canadian Craft Federation he is now the President.
Simon
developed a very successful and popular line of jewellery based upon
Canada's prehistoric rock art, using an etching technique to reproduce
the simple and elegant images. A more complex series involves hand-cutting
the intricate knotwork of the ancient Celts and the elegant and sometimes
contorted animal (Zoomorphic) designs of the 7th and 8th century manuscripts
and Gospels.
Simon`s
most recent work features extremely detailed miniature landscapes created
from up to 15 layers of bronze, copper, and silver. These are also handcut
and riveted together, and are created as both brooches and framed works.
Simon
continues to explore the creation of his landscapes of historic places
and buildings, but creating more one-of-a-kind pieces and entering exhibitions.
