Mary Swain

Mary Swain (Calgary, AB) was born and raised by the mighty Miramichi River in the small village of Nelson Miramichi, New Brunswick. Her days evolved around the woods, brooks and exploring the river’s shorline. Mary believes that growing up close to nature has given her enormous creative energy that embodies her work.

Mary was first introduced to Raku in 1981, at the School of Art and Design in Fredericton, New Brunswick. She was extremely taken by the process and has continued to practice, teach, and develop her own style of contemporary Raku. She continues to develop this vein of pottery because “for me, Raku is more than just a firing process; it is a thought process and a way of life”. Mary’s work can be found in homes and galleries throughout Canada and around the world; including England, Johanessberg and across the United States.

In 2011 Mary began her pursuit of her Masters of Architecture in the Faculty of Environmental Design at the University of Calgary.
