“For many years my career primarily followed a pathway in biological disciplines. I was however, always involved in artistic endeavours that were informed by habitat observations across our western rural and wilderness landscapes. I developed an appreciation for their textures and colours. I have drawn on this reserve of images to develop both representational and abstract works.

Following my biologist career, I worked as the studio technician for the Fine Arts Department at the Grande Prairie Regional College and now as a full-time artist. I have focused my practice primarily on clay sculpture and pit-firing techniques that capture abstract and textural aspects of our landscapes. Pit firing represents an intriguing exploration. The application of various materials and fire create organic patterns across a ceramic landscape. It is always exciting to uncover a piece from the ashes and to see if the firing has produced the anticipated effects.”

Ken Lumbis currently works from his home studio in Grande Prairie, Alberta.
