This SPOTLIGHT exhibition presents ceramic artist Rob Froese’s ongoing experimentation with material and form. It features works from the Flow Form Series begun in 2012, including wheel-thrown and handbuilt tableware made in Medicine Hat, Alberta and Shizuoka, Japan, alongside squared and reconstructed wall works initiated in Meacham, Saskatchewan in 2024. Working across multiple locations and kiln-firing methods deepens the artist’s process-driven approach to clay.
Artist Biography
Rob is a ceramic artist and instructor making objects of use and contemplation that include cups, plates, vase forms, wall works, and site-responsive gallery installations. Raised in Saskatchewan, Rob’s ceramic practice has been strongly influenced by 15 years of making and exhibiting his work in Japan. Since returning to Canada in 2015, he has produced work and taught out of a Saskatoon studio, Medalta International Artists in Residence, Medicine Hat, and the Alberta University of the Arts in Calgary, where he is a Sessional Ceramics Faculty member. His work is informed by an art-centred upbringing, travel and work experiences in Canada, Mexico, Europe and Southeast Asia, and formal art studies at the University of Saskatchewan (BA), University of Regina (BFA), and Alberta University of the Arts (MFA Craft Media). Rob’s ceramic work employs a growing variety of clay bodies, forming techniques, and diverse kiln firing methods.
Our SPOTLIGHT exhibit highlights work by new Alberta Craft members and members producing experimental work.
