Create your own Cookie Cutter with Annette ten Cate

  • Alberta Craft Gallery & Shop – Edmonton 10186 - 106 Street Edmonton, AB, T5J 1H4 Canada (map)

Join Medicine Hat clay artist, Annette ten Cate, in an interactive cookie-cutter making and decorating workshop

Medicine Hat clay artist, Annette ten Cate, will guide us through an interactive cookie-cutter making and decorating workshop. What do cookies and ceramics have in common you ask? Annette has found a sweet spot where her expertise in hand-building transfers into cookie making - and we'll get to try it all! Using simple sketches and folded paper techniques, each participant can create a unique design that will become a cookie cutter. Using pliers, metal cutters, and your own unique design, we will work step-by-step to create our cookie cutter out of a strip of metal hanger tape. We will connect the ends together using low-tech materials that can be easily sourced. After designing and sculpting both your own cookie cutter AND cookie, we’ll pop ‘em in the oven.

While our sweets are baking, explore Annette’s Wildly Sensitive exhibition which imbues anthropomorphic vignettes with humour and whimsy. The exhibition, in the Alberta Craft Council Discovery Gallery, features hand built, clay sculptures that reflect a deep connection to the wildlife of this province, some of which are provincially designated as “at risk”. Depicting her subjects in almost human narratives, wearing human garb, ten Cate invites the viewer to enjoy a sense of wonder about the varied and delightful wildlife that inhabits our Albertan landscape.

Annette ten Cate is a graduate of the Sheridan Craft and Design Program, in Ceramics and went on to do a year-long residency at the Medalta International Artist in Residence Program. Her studio practice is located in sunny Medicine Hat, Alberta, Canada, where you will also find Canada’s Historic Clay District. She is represented by galleries and shops across Alberta including the Alberta Craft Council Edmonton and Calgary.
