Marquetry with Ralph Reichenbach

Learn the ancient art of marquetry in this boutique workshop with accomplished wood artist Ralph Reichenbach. You will be introduced to the craft of applying various pieces of wood veneer to a substrate to form decorative patterns and designs.

Marquetry has been around since ancient Roman times and enjoyed a resurgence initially with Flemish cabinet makers in early 16th Century Europe, from where it spread in popularity and geographical scope. There are many forms and names for it across history and culturally.

Participants will meet at 10am at Bay 1 Gallery to gather inspiration before moving over to the workshop location in the same building. Please note that lunch is not provided but there will be time for a brief lunch break. We recommend that you bring your own bag lunch and water bottle, or have a delivery option ready. There are also a number of restaurants within a short driving distance.

Minimum age for this workshop is 16+.

About your Instructor:

Ralph Reichenbach is a self-taught artist, furniture maker and designer having grown up in his father's wood shop. He attended NAIT in the cabinet making program, graduated the program in one year, at the top of his class and then continued on as an instructor in the advanced woodworking program and apprenticeship program for two years.  Over a number of years, he taught various workshops at NAIT and Red Deer Collage in marquetry. Ralph has been involved in many of the SAWS (Southern Alberta Woodworking Society "Fine Works in Wood" shows since the late 80's, achieving awards on multiple occasions. He specializes in the use of wood veneers and combines them with solid wood to create aesthetically pleasing, decorative and functional objects. His fine furniture pieces and wall hangings are often accented with the age-old craft of marquetry to create pictures that are inspired by his values and experience in life.  Ralph has been featured in a number of galleries such as the TU gallery, Generations Gallery, AGA’s Art on the Block, & Alberta Craft Gallery- Edmonton.
