Snake Bite Creations is Natalie Ley, a Leduc based linocut printmaker. Her background is more textile based as she is a 2019 honours graduate from the Fashion Design program at Fanshawe College. After growing up and going to school in London Ontario, she moved to Alberta in 2021. Originally, she learned lino print making in a high school art class. About 5 years ago, the blocks and carving tools made their reappearance and have been a continuous interest ever since. She has been making hand printed lino cut designs as well as pen drawings that are largely nature inspired. The printmaking process has been done entirely at a home studio and partially by hand, even down to burnishing it into the page with her own thumb.
She loves that printmaking is an art form that has not been changed by digital technology. Each piece is hand carved and printed, a process that feels tactile from beginning to completion. Her mother’s adoration of Alberta birds made an impression on recent pieces to capture their individual personalities on print. All of the recent bird pieces have been depictions of local birds that are observed either in the city or the countryside of Alberta. She has been happy to explore the lino medium as well as share it with others.
